Todd Powelson’s Angels, Demon’s and Animals opens June 11 at the Utah Arts Alliance Main Street Gallery

Salt Lake City – June 11, 2012 -  Todd Powelson spends a lot of time looking up, hoping to glimpse his spirit animals, ravens and falcons. His art show, dedicated to these feathered friends, runs Tuesday, June 11 through July 27 at the Utah Arts Alliance Main Street Gallery. A special reception will be held on June 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The show celebrates everything fierce and frail about birds, as well as attempting to link humanity back to its animal roots.

“Of course birds represent freedom,” says Powelson. “But there is also something very mysterious about ravens, hawks, owls and falcons. My show is about survival at the gut level and how animal instincts continue in humans despite the fact that today we drive a Lexus and drink cappuccino.”

Powelson has created a semi-cubist drawing of a hawk using Adobe Ideas on the iPad that will be for sale as a poster for $19.00 at the show, the Urban Arts Gallery and Frisch vegan restaurant in Salt Lake. All of the proceeds from the poster will be donated to the conservation nonprofit, HawkWatch International. Powelson has created a partnership with HawkWatch, and the organizations bird handlers will bring a live, rehabilitated raptor to interact with the public at his show’s reception on June 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Artwork for the show includes a “flock” of ravens. Each day for weeks, Powelson has sketched a new raven on 4 by 6 inch paper. The sketches capture the beauty of a raven floating through the air, but they don’t neglect the ugly part of nature. Powelson has included deformed claws, beaks and other slight imperfections in his drawings.

“From the ground looking up at the flock you would be inspired by pure beauty,” says Powelson. “But, when you look at each bird up close, you can see the damage of living in the wild. That’s what I see in people too, pure beauty as long as you don’t get too close.”

The Utah Arts Alliance Main Street Gallery is located at 127 South Main Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays noon to 5:00 p.m. Angels, Demons and Animals is the second to last show that will be hung in this gallery. In September, the gallery will be demolished to make way for the new Broadway Theater. For more information, visit www.toddpowelson.com.

Art vs. Craft

Utah Arts Alliance, Main Street Gallery

July 8, 2011, 6:00 - 9:00pm

Art vs. Craft at the Utah Arts Alliance will explore an age old question among quilters, seamstresses, jewelry-makers and potters. Where is the line between art and craft? Is a 100-year old quilt a work of art? Is silver-smithing or broom stick lace gallery-worthy?

In an attempt to respond to these questions with a resounding “yes,” artists from Craft Lake City, Salt Lake City’s (CLC) largest alternative craft festival, will fill the Utah Arts Alliance’s (UAA) Main Street Gallery at 127 South Main Street in Salt Lake City for an exhibit called “Art vs. Craft.” The show runs July 5 through July 30, 2011, with an opening reception on July 8.

“We are excited to welcome fourteen CLC crafters to show at the UAA,” says Michelle Stark, CLC artist coordinator and Art vs. Craft curator. “The show will include print makers Claire Taylor, Nancy Rivera and Travis Bone; repurposed painter Kat Martin, jewelers Steven May, Christine Fedora, Carrie Wakefield and LaLa West; clothing maker Trisha McBride; crochet-artists Anna West and Rachelle Smith; digital artist/screen printer Todd Powelson and furniture maker Keith McKeowan. Artisan food will be offered by Megan Whittaker.”

In addition, the Utah Arts Alliance is calling on other artists and crafters to participate in their fifth monthly Connect event, to take place during the Art vs. Craft reception. Connect invites members of the public to share their work between 7 and 9 p.m. on the second Friday of the month. An established artist in the community will comment on the night’s theme at 8 p.m.

This month’s Connect commentary will be offered by crafter and blogger – Anna West of ArtDuh.com and her partner, fine artist, Todd Powelson. The couple will share their interpretation of the line between art and craft, and explain how art and craft merged when they met and began a life together.

“There was a time when craft wasn’t on my visual radar,” says Todd Powelson, painter, digital fine artist and CLC vendor. “After starting my life with the queen of handcraft, I realized that cubism wasn’t just a Picasso technique, quilters have been using it for hundreds of years. And now I paint embroidery, robes, curtains and folk dancers just as often as I reproduce ancient Greek works like Laocoon. Perhaps the line will truly be crossed when I begin to use a glue gun regularly in my art work.”

The opening reception will be held July 8, 2011 from 6 to 9 p.m. CLC crafter’s work will hang on the gallery walls, sculptural works will take up the floor, and even hand-crafted food, like macaroons, will be served. Connect artists from the community are invited to bring their work at 7 p.m. Those who would like to participate in voting can be entered into a contest for a grant to be awarded by UAA in December.

Performing & Visual Arts Merge in “About Love”

Transfusion Hype Dance Company and Visual Artist Todd Powelson will tell a love story at the Rose Wagner

March 12, 13 and 14, 2009

Transfusion Hype Dance Company is teaming up with visual artist Todd Powelson in About Love, a show about break ups, hook ups and crushes at the Leona Wagner Black Box Theater on March 12, 13 and 14.

“About Love is our annual show,” says Ashlee Prentice, dance company director. “We change it up every year. This time you can expect a bridezilla to rear her ugly head.”

“Everyone has experienced love,” says Todd Powelson, the visual force behind the show. “The drawings and music express the ups and downs of a real life love story.”

Artist Todd Powelson’s pen and ink drawings will serve as the sets for the show paired with original music by UK music producer, Mason Newport. An animated sketch will be created before the audience’s eyes. Powelson’s art will unite the dance and visual elements of the show through the programs, posters and website.

“We wanted every part of the show, from the sets to the flyers to be a work of art,” says Prentice.

Ashlee Prentice the creative force behind Transfusion Hype Dance Company has danced and choreographed for Michael Jackson, BB King and future Olympic gymnasts.

About Love is the fourth show she has directed for her dance company. More information is available at www.transfusionhype.com About Love is showing at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center March 12, 13 and 14. Tickets are $15.00 and are available through www.arttix.org or by calling (801)355-ARTS. Show sponsors include Slug Magazine, C & C Ballet Academy, Diamond Cutts, JAM, Illusial Studios and the Utah Arts Council.

Everyday People

In Utah this Week - by Kelly Ashkettle

We are Every Day

10/02/08 - 10/04/08

Empty museums, toe shoes and subtitles come to mind for many when small talk turns to art at a cocktail party. That’s why Transfusion Hype Dance Company and artist Todd Powelson are joining forces to make art more accessible in We are Every Day.

“The most innovative developments in dance are currently taking place in ghettos and poor neighborhoods,” says Ashlee Prentice, dance company director. “The reason we get out of bed every day is not to navigate road construction or stop at the post office, but to create something beautiful through dance.”

“Hundreds of thousands of gifted artists work washing cars, laying tile and cleaning toilets, but this doesn’t lessen the importance of their work,” says Todd Powelson, the visual force behind the show. “We hope to express the frustration and inspiration in every day life, because art is everyday.”

Todd Powelson’s series of 12 paintings called Dreams for Schmidty will debut in the hallways outside the performance at the Leona Wagner Black Box Theater. Powelson’s paintings will serve as the sets and his pen and ink interpretation of We are Every Day will unite the dance and visual elements of the show through the programs, posters and website.

“We wanted every part of the show, from the sets to the flyers to be a work of art,” says Prentice.

Ashlee Prentice the creative force behind Transfusion Hype Dance Company has danced and choreographed for Michael Jackson, BB King and future Olympic gymnasts. We are Every Day is the fourth show she has directed for her dance company.

Dreams for Schmidty, a series of digital paintings inspired by dreams, is dedicated to Powelson’s friend Ben Schmidt, who died at age 18 from a rare genetic disease. More information is available at www.toddpowelson.com

We are Every Day is showing the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center October 2, 3, and 4. Tickets are $15.00 and are available through www.arttix.org or by calling (801)355-ARTS.
