“Medusa” by Todd Powelson

I woke up a few weeks ago wanting to draw Medusa. I’m not sure if I dreamed of the gorgon or what, but the idea was right there when I woke up.

The story of Medusa is a true Greek tragedy. In addition to the mythology, what really interests me is how, after Perseus severed Medusa’s head, it became a symbol of protection. An aegis. Athena placed it on her shield, and ancient Greek warriors would also paint it onto their own shields and go into battle with it. It is said that Alexander the Great also had Medusa’s head engraved onto his armor and breastplate. The head and face were also used as a sort of evil eye and it was painted over doors and incorporated into floor mosaic.
